| A Request for Modest
Clothing
The Muslim Women's League applauds Ella
Gunderson (an 11 year old girl) from Washington state for her courageous
efforts to influence the current clothing trend. She wrote a letter
to Nordstrom executives to provide more modest alternative clothing for
young girls. The letter was well received by Nordstrom and they
intend to act on the request. As Muslims, modesty is an important
part of our faith - both modesty in behavior and dress. The Quranic
verse addresses this issue: "Tell the believing men to lower
their gaze and to be mindful of their chastity....And tell the believing
women to (also) lower their gaze, avoiding its concentration of and to be
mindful of their chastity, and not to display the charms of their bodies
in public beyond what may (decently) be apparent thereof... (Surah 24,
verse 29-31)
